Freedom of Speech & Protest

This child is holding a protest sign on March 26, 2010, often used by the Westboro Baptist Church, which was in the news today as part of a Supreme Court case about whether its members can be restricted from protesting during funerals. HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — For picture part the assignment, you just need to complete all the elements above:
  • Upload the photo.
  • Aggregate it to an item in the news.
  • Credit the photo and link to the photo, CC license and photographer.
That aside, I also picked this photo because I was hoping you could tell me if it's appropriate to use in a news context, especially given it's a child? Also, is it appropriate to use to describe an event that happened today even though this picture was taken in March?

  1. I have mixed feelings about using this picture. Usually I would hesitate to use a picture of a child. But if the child is holding a sign at a public protest, he, or his parents, must know that they are subjecting the child to public coverage as well. Also, I think using a picture of a child protesting reflects the extreme measures this group is taking to get their point across.

  2. From a photographers point of view, I feel that photographing children can show a different side of a story. Most times, especially in this story, children are being influenced by the adults they are with. In my opinion not many young children know better than to form their own opinions about protest. I would still take the responsibility of notifying the parents that I had captured an image of the child and would of course delete the photos if they did not wish to have them printed.
